The Songs I Cannot Sing

Basically we've had the plague, ie: PINK EYE. And now we are finishing off (actually some of us started off) with a cold. And then for a day or two I lost my voice.

One of the saddest things about losing my voice is that I can't sing.

Whenever we go on any kind of trip, whether it be to the store or to Australia, one of my favorite things about the entire trip is to get in the car and listen to music and to SING. I look forward to being into the car because I get to listen to music. And I enjoy the music most by singing along with it. It's not the same if I can't sing it.

Do you ever drive down the street and take a peek into the other cars to see what kind of people are in them? If you do, have you ever caught anyone singing their head off? I have, and it makes me laugh that I caught them looking just a tad bit foolish and they don't even know I caught them.

But then I realized that I may just be one of these "foolish" looking people.

I try not to get caught singing in the car. When I pull up to stop lights, I try to not be in direct eye sight of the person next to me so that they don't see me singing. If that isn't possible I try to sing covertly, and then am disappointed because they are cramping my style, causing me to have to postpone my joyous full singing moment until the light is green again. If it was my favorite part of the song, sometimes I start it over so I can enjoy it while my car is moving and therefore minimize my chances of being caught.

I've actually been wanting to write this post for many months. Am I a weirdo? Do you sing in your car? When you're driving alone? When you're driving with your kids? When you are driving with friends? (I actually rarely sing when I'm driving with friends. The radio is usually off, and we talk. MUCH safer that way--I've learned through scary/embarrassing near wreck experience...don't want to talk about that...moving on).

I guess it boils down to this simple question: Does the average person sing in their car on a regular basis or only enthusiastic singing weirdos?

Well at any rate, at least I'm not like that weirdo at SUU who likes to ride his bike around campus, listening to his i-pod (or similar device), singing at the top of his lungs songs only he can hear. I'm serious. He made me laugh on the inside and smile on the outside. Granted, there was some nervousness in that laughter, but when I see people of similar nature, I have to laugh, and I think of that SUU guy.

Haha, love this post! I totally rock out in the car! Especially if the kids are there- they love to sing too. When Tyler is in the car, not so much (he likes boring music)

I too try to stop right where the other cars can't see me. I have sung in front of huge crowds before but there is just something not right about being watched while you are rockin it in your car.

I totally sing. And when I'm at a red light behind or beside another car, I keep singing; I just try to look cool while I'm doing it. :) haha Who knows if I'm ever successful.

I used to, but my kids ask me to stop. I think they don't like that I am filling the space with my own voice when they like to fill it with their own chatter.

Love the reference to the bike phantom. Go SUU.

I ALWAYS sing in the car with the kids and by myself too. If Peter is with me though, it is much more rare. If I am friends I don't like to sing (I actually even get embarrassed for people who do sing in front of me if they are trying to sound good. Even if they are good, it doesn't matter, it makes me embarrassed for them) I have tried to tell Peter how crazy loud I sing when he is not in the car with me but I don't know if he believes me or maybe he thinks I am nuts:) I even like to put in certain kind of music. Lots of Rolling Stones and anything upbeat and fun to sing along with (today I think I sang slong to good ol' Frank Sinatra) I am sure I look crazy all of the time but I do try and control myself if a car is beside me:)

I know who you are talking about. I have seen the bike guys at SUU and he creeped me out for some reason. I don't remember the reason, I just remember the creepy feeling.
I sing in the car and the thought never crossed my mind if other people were watching or if I looked weird doing it. Now though I will probably think about it every time, it won't stop me I'm sure, but ... We normally listen to classical music, so not much singing. But I have conducted with my head a time or two, as well as my hands when it was appropriate. But if it's a song a really like, then yes I will sign at the top of my lungs.
Hattie likes to sing too. ABC's as loud as she can. That's always fun in the car.

Heck yes I like to sing in the car! I actually do it a lot more when I'm not at home visiting. Probably has something to do with being from a small town where I feel like I could pass by someone I know at any moment. But pretty much anywhere else I will be singing, and head bopping, etc. I occasionally will wonder what other people are thinking when I'm stopped at a light or in heavy traffic, but it doesn't usually deter me from continuing. Sometimes I just won't be quite so obvious about it when more people are around. I'm a radio junkie, so if I don't know the song, I'm still usually tapping my fingers on the wheel or something.
I will also sing if people are in the car, but usually only if I've known them for awhile. Speaking of, my brother hates it when I sing, and he's even admitted it's not because I'm singing bad. He just really doesn't like it for some reason. But I usually sing anyway, and if he starts to protest, then I do start singing badly on purpose. :-D

Anyway, I'm so glad you posted this! And I love the title! Yay for enthusiastic singing weirdos in the car!!!

I ALWAYS sing in the car and I never care if anyone sees me. If anything at least I put a smile on their face by catching me.:) Let it all out, Meridy and don't worry about what others think.:) I love that you love to sing to the radio. We must be kindred spirits!:)

I also am an enthusiastic singing weirdo. I sing the loudest when I'm alone and the second loudest when it's just me and Russ (cuz he's singing too). I also enjoy to sing with the kids in the car (Easton rocks out with me) but the kids are always talking to me and asking questions, so then I have to turn down the music and answer them. It kind of kills the mood. I don't sing with friends in the car, but I do with young women. Just not as enthusiastically.

I don't usually care who sees me singing, but I do enjoy watching others who look silly while they are singing.

I haven't seen the SUU guy, but I would enjoy that, I think.
